EPA Releases National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has unveiled its "National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution," the third installment in its series to build a circular economy by 2040. The strategy outlines six objectives: reducing pollution from plastic production, innovating material design, decreasing waste generation, improving waste management, capturing and removing plastic pollution, and minimizing its impacts on waterways and oceans. Proposed actions include regulatory updates, expanded research, and fostering extended producer responsibility (EPR) frameworks. Public engagement shaped the strategy, with nearly 92,000 comments received. EPA aims to iteratively implement these goals, advancing resource efficiency and mitigating environmental and health impacts.
