Blacks Have Lost $150 Billion in Equity Due to Biased Home Appraisals

A report from the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) reveals systemic racial bias in home appraisals has cost Black Americans $150 billion in home equity. Homes in Black neighborhoods are undervalued by 47% compared to similar homes in White neighborhoods, limiting wealth-building and intergenerational wealth transfer for Black homeowners. The report highlights disparities in cities like Los Angeles, where undervaluation reaches $561,108. Efforts to address appraisal bias include a pilot program at Fayetteville State University to train Black appraisers. With Black professionals making up only 3% of the appraisal industry, the program aims to promote diversity and fair practices.
